Some Red Hook residents fear that the neighborhood’s historic S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse at 595-611 Smith St. may be demolished because they have seen workers on the roof. Developer Meyer Chetrit has reportedly bought the building, emptied out the structure and removed part of the roof in preparation for building a new apartment complex on the site, according to Brownstoner.

Several weeks ago, local activist Brad Vogel and several others urged the city to designate a long list of historic Gowanus and Red Hook properties, including the Bowne Storehouse, as official landmarks. “This is not just an abstract list,” Vogel told Patch. “It’s a very real concrete list of issues that are happening right now and buildings that stand to be lost next week.”

Our own Lore Croghan also discussed this building in a recent Eye On Real Estate column.
