NOTABLE PEOPLE born on this day include opera singer KATHLEEN BATTLE, who was born in 1948; radio personality and actor DANNY BONADUCE, who was born in 1959; actress QUINN CUMMINGS, who was born in 1967; Olympic speed skater SHANI DAVIS, who was born in 1982; high-wire artist, juggler and author PHILIPPE PETIT, who was born in 1949; and actor KEVIN TIGHE, who was born in 1944.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK WAS BORN ON THIS DAY 1899. English film director and master of suspense born in London. Hitchcock’s career as a filmmaker dates back to the silent film era when he made The Lodger in 1926, based on the tale of Jack the Ripper. American audiences were introduced to the Hitchcock style in 1935 with “The Thirty-Nine Steps” and “The Lady Vanishes” in 1938, after which he went to Hollywood. There he produced a string of classics including “Rebecca,” “Suspicion,” “Notorious,” “Rear Window,” “To Catch a Thief,” “The Birds,” “Psycho” and “Frenzy,” in addition to his TV series, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” He died in 1980 in Beverly Hills.

ANNIE OAKLEY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1860. Annie Oakley developed an eye as a markswoman early as a child, becoming so proficient that she was able to pay off the mortgage on her family farm by selling the game she killed. A few years after defeating vaudeville marksman Frank Butler in a shooting match, she married him and they toured as a team until joining Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in 1885. She was one of the star attractions for 17 years. She died in 1926 in Ohio.
