~RELIVE THE EPIC BATTLE OF BROOKLYNMonday, Aug. 27 marks the anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, the first major engagement of the Revolutionary War to take place after the United States declared its independence in 1776. Numerous events will be taking place in Brooklyn this month to commemorate the epic battle, including re-enactments, tours and a parade. Under cover of bad weather and a British command hesitant to pounce,George Washington led a successful retreat from Brooklyn Heights across the East River into Manhattan, which allowed America to fight another day. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BIGGIE SMALLS, STEAK, AND DIM SUM COME TOGETHER AT BROOKLYN CHOP HOUSE: A chophouse themed around Brooklyn rapperBiggie Smalls is coming to Manhattan in September. Brooklyn Chop House, which will combine traditional chophouse fare with dim sum, is the brainchild ofRobert Cummins, a former music exec and close friend to the late rapper. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant will be decorated with Biggie Smalls lyrics as a “tribute.” The new chophouse will open at 150 Nassau St., and although the new location is in Manhattan, it’s only steps away from the Brooklyn Bridge.(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~SEN. GILLIBRAND TAKES QUESTIONS FROM STUDENTS AND MORE AT BROOKLYN TOWN HALL: Kirsten Gillibrand addressed Brooklyn constituents at the Pratt Institute on Thursday as part of a series of town hall meetings throughout New York City. Gillibrand answered questions from the audience about immigration reform, jobs and health care. Some of those in the audience were Pratt students. One pupil asked the senator about the student debt crisis, and Gillibrand laid out a plan which included lowering the interest rates on student loans from 7-8 percent to 4 percent, which would put $12 billion back into the economy, she said. (Gothamist via Brooklyn Eagle)

~LILLIO CUCINA ITALIANA BRINGS ROMAN CUISINE TO COBBLE HILL: When Lillo Cucina Italiana quietly opened at 331 Henry St. in Cobble Hill last fall, some thought it was merely another “nondescript coffee shop replacing another nondescript coffee shop.” Soon, however, the Italian bakery and restaurant, led by Roman-born Giampietro “Lillo” Remia, began to attract local diners “to the point where the six-table coffee shop became a genuine trattoria.” Notable dishes include Remia’s gnocchi; his sautéed cabbage and artichokes; pasta; and paninis named after famous Italian movies. (Grub Street via Brooklyn Eagle)

~ARBORIST FIRED AFTER SLAMMING BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDEN FOR REMOVING TREEAlec Baxt, an arborist who worked at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was fired recently after he recommended in a Facebook post that garden members “consider canceling [their] membership for a year.” The issue was the garden’s destruction of a 10-foot-high living tree stump with a hollow big enough for people to stand in it, The New York Times reported. Baxt said the the garden’s leadership disregarded recommendations from its horticultural staff – a contention that BBG denies. Most of the tree was chopped down this spring after arborists found that the trunk could no longer support its canopy. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)

~LOWER WILLIAMSBURG RENTS MAY SWEETEN EFFECT OF L-TRAIN SHUTDOWN: If there’s a silver lining to the looming L-train shutdown, it may be found in lower rents. Real estate site StreetEasy reports that someWilliamsburg residents are moving out to avoid the effects of the shutdown, which is slated to begin in April. However, “To entice anyone willing to move in as others relocate, landlords are slashing rents,” Business Insider said. While the average reduction was $250, rents dropped by as much as $400 in several buildings. “These figures are only likely to increase as inventory grows and the L shutdown moves closer,” said Nancy Wu of StreetEasy. (Business Insider via Brooklyn Eagle)
