~BOROUGH HALL SUBWAY STATION CONTINUES TO FALL APART: The entrance stairway on the south side of Joralemon Street in Downtown Brooklyn is the latest section of the Borough Hall subway station to literally fall apart. The metal tops of two of the stairs have been knocked off kilter, and there are cracks running through several of the metal pieces topping the stairs. Bright orange construction netting blocks the entrance. In June, large chunks of the ceiling collapsed onto the 4 and 5 train subway platform. A second ceiling collapse took place in July. MTA has promised to invest millions toward repairs to the station, which is the oldest underground station in Brooklyn. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~COME SEE RECENTLY SOLD HOMES IN MANHATTAN BEACH: Go big or go home. That’s the unofficial motto of developers in Manhattan Beach. Many big, beautiful houses on this Brooklyn peninsula remind us of Miami mansions. Other homes, though not evocative of South Florida, are also big, beautiful and interesting. Even on the steamiest summer day, it’s great fun to walk around the area. Atlantic Ocean breezes will keep you from overheating and keeling over. The other day, we went and tracked down some lovely houses — and a development site — that changed hands recently. ~COUNCILMAN LEVIN WILL SEEK TWEAKS TO 80 FLATBUSH DEVELOPMENT PLAN: The council member whose opinion about the proposed 80 Flatbush development matters most is not ready to approve the project in its current form. “I would like a development that meets the needs of the city and is acceptable to the community,” Councilman Stephen Levin said. He spoke out after a City Council hearing about 80 Flatbush’s design — which calls for the construction of a skyscraper as tall as the Chrysler Building in low-rise Boerum Hill. “I do not want to see a project that does not have the support of the community,” Levin said. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
 ~MAYOR’S PLAN TO CLOSE RIKERS ISLAND WILL DOUBLE THE SPACE IN BROOKLYN’S PRISON: The de Blasio administration announced plans for building four “modern, community-based” jails throughout the four boroughs, minus Staten Island, on Wednesday that are expected to replace Rikers Island. The announcement stressed that the planned facilities will be much safer than Rikers Island and will offer health, educational, visitation and recreational services that will help inmates reintegrate with society once they’ve left jail. The Brooklyn Detention Complex on Atlantic Avenue will be renovated and expanded as part of the plan. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~HERD OF GOATS ESCAPES HALAL SLAUGHTERHOUSE IN BUSHWICK — TEMPORARILY: Every once in a while, a cow or sheep destined for slaughter breaks free from a truck. But that’s nothing compared to what happened inBushwick around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, when more than 20 goats escaped from a pickup truck near a live slaughterhouse and halal market. A neighbor,Marvin Benton, noticed that “the street was covered with goats” and the truck’s driver was asleep. He called the cops, who woke up the owner, Ali Saeed. Bartender Ciaran Flanagan, said, “I’m from Ireland, so I’m used to goats roaming the roads. I didn’t expect to see it here.” (New York Post via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~SHARKS AREN’T MINDLESS KILLERS, BROOKLYN SCIENTIST INSISTS:Dr. Alisa Newton, the head of aquatic health for the Wildlife Conservation Society, doesn’t share the common view of sharks being mindless eating machines and dislikes seeing them pulled out of the water after shark attacks off New York City’s beaches. Newton, who spends 12-hour days at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, insists that “sharks are cool and docile, with personalities and quirks.” Newton, who sometimes gives friendly massages to the aquarium’s resident sharks, also works with other marine animals such as harbor seals. (WSJ via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BOSSERT REPLACES TATTERED AWNING, OWNER DENIES RUMORS OF INFIGHTING: As part of the restoration of the once-elegant Bossert Hotel on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights, workers on Sunday tore down the hotel’s ripped awning after locals complained. “We’re restoring the frame and putting it right back,” hotel property manager Stephen Allen said. The hotel is scheduled to open and welcome new guests this month. David Bistricer of Clipper Equity, one of the hotel’s new owners, stressed that disputes between himself and his partner Joseph Chetrit of the Chetrit Group haven’t delayed the project, despite rumors. (Brooklyn Paper via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: One of six Brooklyn Cyclones All-Stars, outfielder Ross Adolph shone brightest Tuesday night in State College, Pennsylvania.
