THE LEDE: Happy Friday! We take a staycation in Manhattan Beach, North Brooklyn restaurants aren’t worried about the L-train shutdown, and the official state author and poet both have Brooklyn ties. Plus, the borough’s second-most expensive home is a Bay Ridge villa, a Japanese-French restaurant is coming to Crown Heights, and Martha Stewart will host an event in Prospect Park. Finally, Bushwick has a parking problem, we recommend the 25 best cocktail bars in the city, and there’s fireworks tonight at the Coney Island Brewery.

~HEAD TO MANHATTAN BEACH FOR A STAYCATION DAY: Sometimes you really need a quick getaway from your life, but spare cash for an airplane ticket and a hotel room is in short supply. Any summer staycation worthy of the name calls for at least one day at the beach. Coney Island is an ideal staycation getaway for New York City residents. We’re obsessively devoted to its famous landmarks like the Wonder Wheel. And a walk down its cherished Boardwalk will take you to Brighton Beach, where you can eat borscht at beachfront Russian cafes. But today we’re going to extol the virtues of Brooklyn’s other point of access to the Atlantic Ocean — Manhattan Beach.(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~WRITERS WITH TIES TO BROOKLYN NAMED NYS AUTHOR AND POET: Two renowned writers with Brooklyn ties have been appointed as the state’s official author and poet by Gov. Andrew CuomoColson Whitehead, Brooklyn resident for more than a dozen years, has been named New York’s 12th state author. Alicia Ostriker, born in Brooklyn, has been named New York’s 11th state poet. Cuomo said the award recognizes their work “and the impact it has had on the people of New York and beyond.” During their two-year terms the state laureates promote and encourage fiction writing and poetry throughout New York by giving public readings and talks. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN’S SECOND-MOST EXPENSIVE HOME IS A BAY RIDGE VILLA: Brooklyn’s second most expensive home just hit the market with an asking price of $15 million. The Bay Ridge mansion is styled like an Italian villa, complete with columns, gilding and marble. The property sits on half an acre, and includes not only a two-car garage and swimming pool (with a slide), but also two solariums and a gazebo. Inside, the house boasts seven bedrooms, seven and a half bathrooms, multiple sitting rooms and a master suite with a dressing room that has its own separate balcony. (WSJ via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NORTH BROOKLYN RESTAURANTS REMAIN OPTIMISTIC DESPITE LOOMING L-TRAIN SHUTDOWN: The L-train shutdown is just around the corner, but restaurants along the train’s path are staying positiveTrigg Brown, co-owner of Taiwanese restaurant Win Son, said that despite the L being closed down this past weekend, the restaurant “still cranked out about 200-plus covers per night in our little 50-seater.” Some see the shutdown as a harbinger of new business. “With the lack of the mobility into the city,” saidJustin Losh of real estate company Nooklyn, “There’s a theory that the bars and restaurants along the L train will fare the best.” (Grub Street via Brooklyn Eagle)

~JAPANESE-FRENCH RESTAURANT COMING TO FORMER BREWERY BUILDING: A Tokyo restaurateur is opening a Japanese-French restaurant called Doma in the redeveloped 19th century Nassau Brewery building at 620 Franklin Ave. in Crown HeightsYuji Tani will be paying more than $70 per square foot for a 1,000-square-foot space on the ground floor. The restaurant, which is expected to open next spring or summer, will occupy the Bergen Street side of the building. While this is the first stateside restaurant for Tani, his Tokyo eatery House serves Japanese food with French and Northern European influences. (Commercial Observer via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MARTHA STEWART TO BRING FOOD, WINE TO PROSPECT PARKS: The USA Today Network will partner with Martha Stewart to bring the Martha Stewart Wine and Food Experience to the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event is part of “an American culinary tour for fans and connoisseurs alike which will include exploration of fine food, wine, craft beer and spirits from local and national chefs and mixologists,” according to My Central Jersey. About 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, in addition to top chefs from the city’s culinary community.(My Central Jersey via Brooklyn Eagle)

~STREET-SWEEPING RULES LEAD DRIVERS TO BLOCK BUSHWICK STREET WITH THEIR CARS: Drivers on a five-block stretch of Jefferson Avenue in Bushwick often leave their cars in the middle of the street on alternate-side parking days to avoid getting tickets. It’s been this way since a bike lane was installed between Knickerbocker Avenue and Broadway in 2016. Motorists can’t double-park during Tuesday and Friday morning street-sweeping hours because they’ll get summonses for blocking the bike lane. For unsuspecting motorists who are trying to drive down the avenue during the 90-minute period, it’s often chaos. (New York Post via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Playing their best when it matters most is something the Brooklyn Cyclones haven’t come close to achieving over the past five seasons. This summer appears to be different. With a critical series against McNamara Division-leading Hudson Valley looming this weekend, the Baby Bums made up more ground on the first-place Renegades Wednesday night in Coney Island, knocking off visiting Vermont, 4-1. The Cyclones’ season-high fifth straight win moved them within two games of the Renegades in the ongoing hunt for the division crown. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
