~DE BLASIO ADMINISTRATION TO FOCUS ON BROOKLYN ALL WEEK: Mayor Bill de Blasio will be spending a lot more time in his home borough of Brooklyn this week, since it’s Brooklyn’s turn for “City Hall in Your Borough.”The program is designed to allow the administration to hear directly from residents and focus on their concerns for a full week. During the week, administration will pack in local ribbon cuttings, visits to health and employment centers, tours of startups and wastewater treatment plants and press conferences with numerous local officials. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~STUDENTS SPEND THEIR SUMMER RESTORING GRAVES AT GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY: Eight high school students will have plenty of stories to share when classes resume. The pupils recently wrapped up their internships at Green-Wood Cemetery where they spent their summer researching and restoring burial sites. The Brooklyn cemetery offered a five-week internship program, which allowed the teenagers to research, recover and restore more than 150 gravestones — some of which were over 200 years old. This was the program’s second year. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN’S FIRST CHICK-FIL-A TO OPEN NEAR BARCLAYS CENTER: Chick-fil-A, the controversial fried-chicken chain, is soon to set up shop in Brooklyn, continuing its rapid spread through New York City. The restaurant has opened six locations in just three years across the city, with five locations in Manhattan and one in Queens, but this will be its first foray into Brooklyn. When Chick-fil-A first came to New York in 2015, the chain was still haunted by controversy following reports of its opposition to same-sex marriage. The Brooklyn location will open at 166 Flatbush Ave. across from Barclays Center.(TRD via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~CLOUDED, TANGLED HISTORY LEADS TO EMPTY, UNSOLD GOWANUS BROWNSTONE: A three-story brick townhouse in Gowanus sold for a mere $20,000 in late 2013, and is now almost impossible to sell because of its“clouded” history involving multiple sales, legal and not-so-legal entities, mortgages and banks. Cole Hawes Louison recalls how, when he moved into an apartment in the home in 2011, the owner, Eddie, insisted that he pay in cash. Louison later learned that Eddie in fact didn’t own the house, and had sold it to someone named Barrington Adrian. A series of other bizarre events led to neither Eddie or Adrian owning the house, which is still unsold. (The Outline via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~SPIKE LEE RECEIVED $219,000 TO PRODUCE ADS FOR NYPD: NYPD recently gave filmmaker Spike Lee’s production company $219,113 inconsulting fees to help produce ads for the de Blasio administration’s community policing initiative. “The NYPD came to me knowing I have been critical of them,” Lee said. “I think it’s important for open dialogue to make what has been a tough relationship better.” NYPD’s Benjamin Tucker said he considered Lee precisely because, “You want to reach out to folks. Not just the folks who are supporters pretty consistently, but also folks who have certainly been critics in the past.” (WSJ via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~CONEY ISLAND’S THIRD ACT IS NOW UNDERWAY, THANKS TO REZONING: Can Coney Island transform itself from a seasonal amusement area into a year-round community? If so, it would be “Act 3” in the beachfront area’s history. Act 1 was the heyday of the neighborhood as a fun destination, with hotels, three large amusement parks, hotels and restaurants. Act 2, the years of Coney’s decline, began in the late 1950s and ’60s and saw the closing of Steeplechase Park, the construction of high-rise city housing projects and the rise of gangs. ~BUSHWICK’S ‘ALABAMA JOE’ TURNED LOVE OF BARBECUE INTO MAKING AND SELLING GRILLS: Joe Hudson, known as “Alabama Joe,” can be found almost every day on a lot at the corner of De Sales Place and Broadway in Bushwick, making and selling his own homemade charcoalbarbecue grills. Hudson, who came here from Alabama in 1977 and retired from a Brooklyn trucking company in 1997, spent much of his free time grilling slow-smoked ribs and chicken, but he couldn’t find a grill that kept the charcoal far away enough from the meat. When someone told him there was no way he could make a grill from scratch, Hudson resolved to meet the challenge.(Bushwick Daily via Brooklyn Eagle)
