~DUMBO GETS ITS FIRST HISTORIC MARKER: The very desirable and constantly changing neighborhood of DUMBO in Brooklyn is a living piece of New York City’s history, with soaring Manhattan Bridge archways, Belgium block roads and embedded train tracks from a not-so-long-ago industrial era. Now, after a 21-year preservation effort, the neighborhood finally has its own historic district markers to promote and commemorate the DUMBO Historic District. The first of three markers was unveiled Friday by the city Landmarks Preservation Commission, New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation and the DUMBO Neighborhood Alliance. The 19-by-36-inch terra cotta-colored sign features a map on one side and a brief description and history of the district on the other. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~SAFER NINTH STREET REDESIGN IN PARK SLOPE NEAR COMPLETION: The redesign of the area in Park Slope where a driver struck and killed two children this past March is nearly done. After the devastating crash, Park Slope parents and advocates rallied for a new, safer street designat the corner of Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue, where the driver had sped through a red light and hit five pedestrians, including 1-year-old Joshua Lewand 4-year-old Abigail Blumenstein. The redesign includes enhanced bike lanes, shortened pedestrian crossings, slow-turn treatments, reductions in double parking and narrowed traffic lanes to reduce speeding. ~2 CHAINZ JOINS LINEUP AT FREE GOWANUS MUSIC FESTIVAL BARBECUE: In a dynamic farewell to summer, 2 Chainz will join the lineup for the second annual Genius IQ/BBQ concert series. The barbecue-concerthybrid met initial success in its inaugural year last summer, when more than 1,000 concertgoers showed up to the Genius headquarters in Gowanus. Sharing the festival stage with 2 Chainz will be Princess Nokia, Jack Harlow, Tierra Whack and more. And true to the barbecue theme, Bareburger and Salt & Bone Smokehouse will do the catering. ~ARTISTS REINTERPRET FLAGS AT OLD STONE HOUSE EXHIBITION:“For Which it Stands,” a contemporary art exhibition that provides a look at the relevance of flags in the current political climate, opened Thursday night at the Old Stone House. Through reinterpretations of the American flag and the flags of the American Revolution, 15 artists connected Brooklyn’s revolutionary history to compelling contemporary issues as they reflected on how the founding flags’ values are being upheld today and how those flags connect communities around the world. The exhibit decked out the house inside and out, including a large-scale installation with illuminated banners calling for solidarity in multiple languages on the house’s Fourth Avenue facade. ~NEW STOP TO BE ADDED ON B44 SBS ROUTE: After four years of community activism, a new stop will be added to the B44 Select Bus Service (SBS) route at Avenue R and Nostrand Avenue. The stop is slated to be installed during the first two weeks of September. Its addition will offer commuters an easier transfer to the B2 and the B31, the buses that connect local residents to the Q train, which is the only local line in the area. ~FORMER CDC DIRECTOR ARRESTED IN BROOKLYN ON SEX ABUSE CHARGE: The former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Thomas Frieden was arrested in Brooklyn on charges he grabbed the buttocks of a woman he knew in his home last October. The woman reported the incident in July and Frieden, who was also a city health commissioner, was charged with forcible touching, sex abuse and harassment. (Associated Press via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~PIECES OF A CELEBRATED LIFE, FOR SALE ON MONTAGUE STREET:It’s been over a year since Christopher Wall died (in May 2017), and the furniture, tea cups, paintings and mementos from his celebrated home at 11 Cranberry St. were on sale all week in a vacant storefront at 150 Montague St. Chris Wall was a 35-year veteran of the advertising industry. He worked at Ogilvy & Mather for decades, most recently as vice chairman of Ogilvy North America, where he inspired ferocious devotion from his friends and co-workers.  At 6 feet 10 1/2 inches tall, Wall was dubbed “The Great Wall.” He received hundreds of awards including Cannes Lions, Clios and The One Show — but his biggest prize was his Brooklyn Heights home, he told Ad Age.
