Expanded NYC ferry service opens new possibilities
Wednesday saw the launch of the sixth and final NYC ferry route, running to the Lower East Side. Now, the mayor says the city will decide later this year about adding more ferry services throughout the rest of the city.
According to amNewYork, the mayor was vague about the details on where exactly that service would be. Officials in Coney Island, Sunset Park and Canarsie have been rallying for added ferry routes in their neighborhoods for over a year now. “It shouldn’t take two hours to get to work from Brooklyn,” state Sen. Diane Savino, who represents the 23rd District, said last summer.
Even though Mayor de Blasio has faced criticism about the capacity of the ferries (150 passengers in most cases) and their high subsidies ($6.60 per rider) he maintains that he has high hopes for the future of the NYC Ferry. De Blasio announced earlier this year that he hoped the ferry would service as many as nine million annual passengers by 2023, which was twice the number predicted before the program’s launch.
