~AS WEST NILE MOSQUITOS SPREAD ACROSS BROOKLYN, CITY TO SPRAY TONIGHT: Mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus have spread across Brooklyn, with mosquito traps and water pools testing positive in 17 Brooklyn ZIP codes as of Aug. 2. While most people infected with West Nile suffer no long-term damage, about 20 percent come down with West Nile Fever or more severe “neuroinvasive” effects ranging from headache or neck stiffness to convulsions, encephalitis, meningitis or death. The city will begin spraying pesticide in neighborhoods running from Downtown Brooklyn toMill Basin tonight. Trucks will be out between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. tomorrowmorning. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~OFFICIALS DENOUNCE ‘SICK’ ANTI-CHINESE GRAFFITI IN BENSONHURST: An attack on one group of people is an attack on the entire community. That was the message at a press conference on Monday where BPEric Adams joined local elected leaders, political hopefuls, the United Chinese Association of Brooklyn and a number of residents to denounce a pattern ofanti-Chinese graffiti that popped up at several sites in Bensonhurst over the weekend. “This is an assault on our community, what we stand for and what we represent,” said Adams, who offered a $1,000 reward for information on the incident. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~JUMAANE WILLIAMS CONVICTED OF BLOCKING AMBULANCE IN PROTEST: Brooklyn Councilman Jumaane Williams was sentenced to time served after he was convicted of blocking an ambulance during a protest over the detention of a prominent immigration rights activist in January. A jury on Monday found Williams guilty of obstructing emergency services. He was acquitted of disorderly conduct and the more serious charge of obstruction of government services. The 41-year-old Democrat from Brooklyn was arrested outside a federal building over the detention of Ravi Ragbir, a citizen of Trinidad who has been fighting deportation after a fraud conviction. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN’S OTHER HALF BREWING CO. FINDS SECOND HOME WITH UPSTATE BREWERY: Last week, Empire State Development announced that Other Half has bought a nearly-new brewery in East Bloomfield, about a half-hour drive southeast of Rochester in the Finger Lakes region. The ESD, the state’s economic-development agency, said it had offered up to $400,000 in tax credits to support the purchase. The reaction upstate, which already has plenty of its own breweries, was jubilant. “We are thrilled,” said town supervisor Frederick Wille. “This is a very big deal for us.” (The Bridge via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~WHERE’S RAMBO? IT’S IN BROOKLYN, SAYS GOOGLE MAPS: Longtime residents of city neighborhoods from coast to coast are often puzzled byarbitrary names that Google Maps gives to their long-established areas. In Brooklyn, for example, names such as BoCoCa (the area between Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens) and RAMBO (Right Around the Manhattan Bridge) have appeared on and off in Google Maps, according to The New York Times. Tad Bogdan, who lives in the Rincon Hill area of San Francisco, which has suddenly become known as the East Cut, told the Times, “It’s degrading to the reputation of our area.” (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~MTA TO CUT SERVICE ON L TRAIN FOR 15 WEEKENDS TO PREPARE FOR SHUTDOWN: MTA plans to cut service on the L train between Manhattan and Brooklyn during 15 weekends to prepare for the line’s 15-month shutdown beginning next spring. Westbound service will terminate at Bedford Avenue every weekend in October, the second and third weekends in November, every weekend in February, the first three weekends in March and the weekend of April 13-14. (Patch via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN GROWTH FUELS NYC’S ECONOMIC EXPANSION: NYC’s economic expansion during the past three years has been fueled by gains in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens, according to a series of reports. In Brooklyn, the population has increased 19 percent since 1980; 36 percent of the population are immigrants, who contribute to the growth of businesses. “Brooklyn’s story is all about the college graduates flocking to live there,” Crain’s said. “The number of people ages 25 to 34 has jumped by nearly 100,000 since 2000, and the number of residents with a bachelor’s degree or higher rose by 15 percentage points to what is now the citywide average, 36 percent.” (Crain’s via Brooklyn Eagle)
