And the award for most obstructed bike lane in New York City goes to… 72nd Street, between Third Ave and Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge.
In the past year, 94 311 complaints have been filed by angry bikers who don’t have space to maneuver through the thin bike lane. This stretch of 72nd Street runs right in front of Public School 102, and it is not uncommon for the bike lane to be filled with parents during pick-up and drop-off, parked bumper-to-bumper.
Just a month after a garbage truck hit and killed a cyclist forced out of the bike lane by a parked Uber in Manhattan, concern for biker safety in New York is high. “Anytime a car blocks a bike lane, it means a cyclist needs to veer into traffic and can put them in danger,” Erwin Figueroa, senior organizer of pro-bike group Transportation Alternatives, told the New York Post.
