Brooklyn Center for the Arts closes suddenly, fires entire full time staff
In a shocking and unanticipated move, Brooklyn Center for Performing Arts at Brooklyn College shut down last week, leaving all of its full-time employees without jobs.
Although the college cited budgetary reasons and construction delays in its decision, the closure came as a complete surprise to the staff. The full-time employees, four in total, were all “terminated immediately,” a source told Bklyner. Four other staff members were placed in part-time jobs at the new Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts, now receiving 1/4 of their previous pay.
The center, known for its past 64 years of operation as The Brooklyn Center for the Arts, only started operating under the umbrella of Brooklyn College this past July — a transition that didn’t go all too smoothly, according to a source who told Bklyner, “In 64 years, we made it through the Vietnam war, the Great Recession, but couldn’t survive 64 days after becoming a part of the college.”
