THE LEDE: Happy Wednesday! Brooklyn battles a beetle, a Carroll Gardenskindergarten gets landmarked, and we admire street art in Bushwick. Plus, a man is arrested in the Kings Plaza parking garage fire, we give instructions on how to keep pigeons away from your home, and affordable housing is coming to the former Greenpoint Hospital. Finally, the Frankies Spuntino Group is making some changes, and there’s a stress relief workshop at the Brooklyn Public Library this afternoon.

~SEARCH FOR ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLE CONTINUES IN BROOKLYN STREETS AND YARDS: Teams of agriculture inspectors wearing yellow hard hats can been seen measuring trees and peering through binoculars at leafy canopies on the streets and in the yards of Brooklyn this week as part of the ongoing battle against a devastating pest called Asian Longhorned Beetle. “We’re coming to do a triple check just to make sure we’ve eradicated the areas. It’s on 11 species of trees,” a USDA inspector said. Roughly half of the trees in NYC are vulnerable to the invasive black-and-white insect, first discovered in Greenpoint in 1996. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~CARROLL GARDENS’ HANS S. CHRISTIAN MEMORIAL KINDERGARTEN GETS LANDMARKED: The Hans S. Christian Memorial Kindergarten need not fear the wrecking ball. It has been landmarked. A concerted campaign by preservationists, politicians and Carroll Gardens residents has paid off for the two-story, buff-colored brick building at 236 President St. Brooklyn’s first purpose-built free kindergarten, constructed in 1897, was in danger of being torn down. Not anymore. On Tuesday, the LPC voted unanimously to designate both this property and the Anglo-Italianate brick mansion at 238 President St. as individual landmarks. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~COME SEE STREET ART NEAR BUSHWICK’S DEKALB AVENUE L TRAIN STOP: Mural, mural on the wall. There’s lots of great street art in Bushwick. We took pictures of some prime examples the other day during a photo shoot near the L train’s DeKalb Avenue stop. Many beautiful works were painted on the facades of local businesses. For instance, a mural of a tiger with Asian dragons graces the DeKalb Avenue side of Chinese restaurant Lee Garden at 121 Wyckoff Ave. The mural on the opposite side of DeKalb Avenue, on Sal’s Pizzeria at 119 Wyckoff Ave., is pretty great, too. It’s a portrait of a graffiti artist. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MAN ARRESTED ON ARSON CHARGES IN KINGS PLAZA PARKING GARAGE FIRE: Police have arrested a man on arson charges in connection with the fire in a parking garage that damaged dozens of vehicles and sent thick black smoke billowing over Mill BasonAvon Stephens, 23, of Brooklyn, was arrested Monday, hours after the fire broke out on two floors of the four-story garage around 9 a.m. The Kings Plaza mall was closed as a result. Fire officials say 21 people were injured. All but three of them were firefighters. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening. It took nearly three hours to get the fire under control. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)

~A GUIDE TO SHOOING PIGEONS OFF YOUR HOME: No Brooklynite wants to open their window on a warm morning to discover a roost of pigeons on the windowsill. Not only are property owners required by the city to clean up all pigeon poop on their property, but these droppings contain a fungus that can occasionally cause disease. Preventative measures include wire systems that are placed on window ledges and lintels, pointed spikes, shock traps and netting. The process often requires the use of a lift, so homeowners should wait for alternate side parking or do it when scaffolding is up. This, however, can cost anywhere from $2,500 to $3,000. (Brownstoner via Brooklyn Eagle)

~AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND NEW SHELTER COMING TO GREENPOINT HOSPITAL SITE: After years of disruptions from minor hiccups to full-blown lawsuits, the redevelopment of the former Greenpoint Hospital is moving forward. Plans for the six-building complex in East Williamsburg center around 100 percent affordable housing, with multifamily units, about 21,500 square feet of community space and two entirely new buildings, one dedicated to seniors and the other to a new shelter. The project is slated to be carried out in two stages. (Brownstoner via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: The Islanders gave up the most shots and goals in the league on their way to missing the playoffs for a second straight season in 2017-18. New Islanders head coach Barry Trotz, fresh off leading the Capitals to their first-ever Stanley Cup title last year, isn’t used to anything resembling the Isles’ sieve-like defense. “Today was all about trying to create a little bit of a foundation and identity and find out which guys are willing to battle and compete,” Trotz said after holding his initial training camp practice. “I don’t think there’s a guy here who said it was easy.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)
