~COME SEE BUSHWICK, BEFORE OR AFTER THE L-TRAIN SHUTDOWN:The other day, we rode the L train deep into the heart of Bushwick. Wehopped off the train at the DeKalb Avenue stop on the corner of Wyckoff Avenue. It’s thoroughly entertaining to walk in a loop down Wyckoff Avenue to Myrtle Avenue, past the White Castle, up Irving Avenue and back to the DeKalb Avenue train station. Picturesque rowhouses with storefronts populate many of the blocks. You can eat and drink yourself silly at Colombian bakeries, shops with specialty foods from Mexico and Ecuador, Thai and Caribbean restaurants and hipster-friendly coffee shops. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~EL CHAPO’S BACK IN BROOKLYN COURT FOR HEARING ON POTENTIAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST AT TRIALEl Chapo is scheduled to be back in Brooklyn’s federal court today as the parties have requested a Curcio hearing, or a hearing to determine whether a conflict of interest exists regarding representation of the defendant by Jeffrey Lichtman. Lichtman, who is known for representing John Gotti Jr., the son of Gambino family mobster John Gotti, was hired by El Chapo in August 2017. Gotti Jr.’s case ended in an acquittal of a $25 million securities fraud charge and a deadlocked jury on each of the remaining charges. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN DIOCESE TO PAY $27.5M TO SETTLE 4 SEX ABUSE CLAIMS: Four men who said they were sexually abused as boys by a teacher at a Catholic church have reached a $27.5 million settlement with the Diocese of Brooklyn. On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that the agreement is one of the largest settlements ever awarded to victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church. “These were boys who were abused in second grade through sixth grade, for years for some of them,” said Ben Rubinowitz, one of the lawyers for the victims. “The egregious nature of the conduct is the reason that the church paid what they did.” (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)

~HOW A BROOKLYN GIVING CIRCLE SETS A TREND IN CHARITY:ALLINBKLYN, a women’s philanthropic initiative, doesn’t just write checks and wish people well. Its 60 members get to know their subjects intimately. FatherJim O’Shea, who runs a nonprofit in Bed-Stuy, saw their immersive approach firsthand. “They’re very hands-on in terms of coming and visiting,” O’Shea said. ALLINBKLYN is modeled on the traditional giving circle, a form of philanthropy in which a group of people pools its individual donations — as well as its ideas and research — in order to have a larger impact. Since its founding in 2014, ALLINBKLYN has made 61 grants to 35 Brooklyn nonprofits, giving away nearly $1 million. (The Bridge via Brooklyn Eagle)

~LA VARA OWNERS INTRODUCE NEW SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN COBBLE HILL: Alex Raij and Eder Montero, the married couple behind the popular Cobble Hill Spanish restaurant La Vara, are opening their newest restaurant today. Saint Julivert Fisherie, located at 264 Clinton St., boasts a creative menu that centers around seafood. Dishes include raw scallops with shiso tacos, sea urchin with a sweet-corn chawanmushi custard and tuna casserole with leaf. Others plates are more reminiscent of Raij’s Spanish restaurants: Txikito-style octopus carpaccio and skate with sherry, chili and parsley. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)

~CONEY ISLAND BREWERY CREATES ITS NEW CEREAL BEER SERIES: Good news for the mimosa-adverse: You can now have beer for breakfast.Matt McCall of Coney Island Brewing has introduced an array of cereal-inspired beers, from Count Flocula, a Kolsch-style ale aged on cocoa nibs, to Blueberry Boo-Liner, a Berliner Weisse-style ale with notes of marshmallow and aged on blueberry puree. The newest additions to Coney Island Brewing’s repertoire will be available at this Saturday’s Freaktoberfest, an Oktoberfest-meets-Coney-Island event hosted by the company with beer tastings and a nighttime screening of Dracula. (amNewYork via Brooklyn Eagle)

~TAKE A LOOK AT 1970S AND ’80S BROOKLYN: In his new book“Brooklyn Before: Photographs, 1971-1983,” South Brooklyn native Larry Racioppo offers a look into the borough’s past, when kids walked around with boom boxes and when, according to Racioppo, “rents were so low, you could work and make a decent living without a college degree.” In an interview with Vice, the photographer explains that his passion for the art began after his friend lent him a camera. “I took my first roll of film walking around the city talking to people and I just sort of liked it and it stuck with me,” he said.”(VICE via Brooklyn Eagle)

~‘THE DEUCE’S’ CONEY ISLAND EPISODE BRINGS GRIT BACK TO THE BOARDWALK: After flipping through old photographs of the boardwalk atConey Island, “The Deuce’s” film crew found the secret to bring present-day Coney back into the past: garbage. The crew arrived at 4 a.m. with bins of dirt, garbage, clippings of old newspapers, hand-painted vintage signs and detachable graffiti covers to recreate the grittiness of the now-well-kept area. “The big thing for us was that Coney Island was much dirtier back in 1978,” production designer Scott Dougan said. The transformation, however, wasn’t too difficult, thanks to that fact that many of the original structures, like the Wonder Wheel and Nathan’s Famous, have remained unchanged. (amNewYork via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson accepted plenty of plaudits last season for making an eight-game improvement over his brutal debut campaign. After going an NBA-worst 20-62 in 2016-17, Brooklyn bumped its record up to 28-54 last season, and received compliments from their opponents for their collective efforts. One week away from opening the annual training camp, Atkinson, alongside general manager Sean Marks, met with the local media Tuesday at the team’s Sunset Park practice facility to discuss what must improve for these Nets to make the jump back into serious contention. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
