33-year Brooklyn resident and grandmother deported, family given no notice
Last week, ICE deported Brooklyn resident of 33-years Gloria Hernandez Suarez — a mother and grandmother who arrived in the U.S. from Mexico in 1985 — without giving any notice to her family.
Prior to her deportation, Suarez, 61, spent two months in a detention center in New Jersey after being arrested in July. The New Sanctuary Coalition told Gothamist that Suarez’s attorney filed an application for asylum on her behalf, though she hadn’t specifically asked him to do so. The attorney, according to a coalition spokesperson, filed the application “knowing that it [would] be denied and she would end up in deportation proceedings.”
Nancy Aquino, one of Suarez’s four children who were all U.S. citizens, spoke at a conference outside ICE’s Manhattan offices last week, where she told the crowd, “My mother is not a criminal. … The only thing she wanted was to be in this country with her family — with her kids, her grandchildren and her husband.”
