~COME SEE THE SETTING SUN FROM WILLIAMSBURG’S SHORELINE:Sunsets are spectacular even when the weather’s moody if you stand on the right snippet of shoreline in Williamsburg. Fall has just arrived, and folks want to get outdoors as much as possible while temps remain reasonably warm. So even on dreary days, a sunset stroll is eminently worthwhile at Bushwick Inlet Park and adjacent East River State Park. Entrances to both parks can be found on Kent Avenue near North 9th Street. ~BROOKLYN GRAND JURY INDICTS ATTORNEY ON CHARGES OF BRIBING WITNESS: Queens criminal defense attorney John Scarpa Jr. wasindicted in federal court in Brooklyn Tuesday for allegedly bribing a witness who testified in a double-homicide trial. Scarpa allegedly plotted with Charles Gallman to bribe a witness to give false testimony in a trial for Scarpa’s clientReginald Ross who was charged with two unrelated murders. “Everyone accused deserves the best defense, but attorneys cannot use illegal methods to win in court,” said Richard Sweeney of the the FBI.  (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN RESIDENTS CAN DECIDE HOW TO SPEND $1 MILLION: You don’t have to be a politician to have a say in the city budget, thanks to an innovative program that allows everyday citizens to propose capital projects, pitch their bold ideas to fellow residents and then vote to decide which notions get serious city funding. It’s called Participatory Budgeting and it’s all the rage on the New York City Council. Eleven members of the council’s Brooklyn delegation are bringing participatory budgeting to their districts for the 2018-2019 cycle. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN NAVY YARD REPORTS RECORD-SETTING JOB CREATION IN 2018: More than 450 people were connected to jobs by the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation in 2018, the most in its employment center’s 19-year history. A report released on Wednesday by the group found that of the 459 hires, 84 percent are Brooklyn residents and 33 percent are from the Yard’s nearest five surrounding zip codes. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYNITES SOUND OFF ON WHAT LEGAL WEED COULD LOOK LIKE: While New York seems likely to legalize marijuana for recreational use, plenty of deliberation is happening first. Tuesday night was Brooklyn’s turn tosound off about how legal marijuana should be controlled and who should profit from it. Last month, shortly after the publication of a study that concluded the “positive effects” of marijuana legalization in New York “outweigh the potential negative impacts,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo pieced together a workgroup tasked with drafting legislation for a regulated, adult-use marijuana program. (The Bridge via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~MTA REPORTS SOME SUBWAY IMPROVEMENTS, BUT SERVICE IS STILL ‘IN CARDIAC ARREST’: Andy Byford, head of MTA, insists that subway service is getting better. But most straphangers, citing crumbling concrete, rodents, floods and delays, dispute that. The disparity may be because “major incidents,” the type of meltdowns that delay 50 or more trains, have dropped about 11.7 percent compared with 2017. However, everyday delays are still extremely common — only about 68 percent of trains were on time this past summer. “Our subway system is in cardiac arrest,” MTA’s Scott Rechler said. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~MUSEUM OF PIZZA IS COMING TO WILLIAMSBURG: This October,Williamsburg will welcome the newest pizza parlor to its streets — but this one comes with an attached museum. The Museum of Pizza, scheduled to open as a pop-up on Oct. 13 at The William Vale hotel, will be part slice shop, part exhibition. Exhibits will include an interactive history of pizza and a psychedelic pizza party, along with artist-designed rooms reminiscent of Refinery29’s 29Rooms activation, with Instagram-ready themes ranging from “Pizza Library” to “The Pizza Vortex.” (amNewYork via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~STRINGER COMPLAINS ABOUT LOSS OF AFFORDABLE APARTMENTS IN BROOKLYN: Fashionable, well-publicized Brooklyn lost more inexpensive apartments than any other borough during the past decade, according to a report released by city Comptroller Scott Stringer. In 2005, Brooklyn had 513,077 rental apartments that cost $900 or less. Now, only 145,701 remain. Citywide, only 20 percent of all apartments cost $900 or less compared to 74 percent in 2005. “Housing should be a way into the middle class, not a barrier to it. We need to take action,” Stringer said. (New York Post via Brooklyn Eagle)
