~HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO WEIGH IN ON THE FUTURE OF GOVERNORS ISLAND: Look west, Brooklyn: Just a short kayak paddle from Brooklyn Bridge Park, a new global hub for the arts, technology and education is set to rise. The public review process for a rezoning of the southern half of Governors Island kicked off on Aug. 24. The plan is to open the island, up till now mostly a warm-weather park and weekend events location, to a year-round destination, with 4.5 million square feet of commercial, academic, cultural and institutional development. A public hearing on the proposal will be held on Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. at the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~GARDENERS PROTEST 80 FLATBUSH DEVELOPMENT: Members of Brooklyn Bear’s Rockwell Garden alongside dozens of neighbors from Fort Greene and Boerum Hill, marched around 80 Flatbush Ave. last Thursday, chanting “save our sunlight,” to protest a proposed 925-foot tower at the site that would block natural light to the garden. “80 Flatbush with the 78-story tower would be threatening our sunlight for most of the day and throw this garden into shadow,” said Ron Janoff, coordinator of the garden. The project’s draft environmental impact statement found that if built, the development would cause “significant adverse impacts” to surrounding areas such as the community garden and the BAM South plaza. ~COME WALK ACROSS THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE AT SUNRISE: Tourists do it. Why not give it a try? Travel websites tell everybody that walking across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunrise is an awesome experience. Guess what? They’re right. Strolling the iconic span at dawn belongs on Brooklynites’ bucket lists. People come from all over the world to do this. Don’t let them have all the fun. Check out these Brooklyn Eagle photos from a recent sunrise stroll across the famous bridge. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~OY/YO SIGN MOVING TO BROOKLYN MUSEUM: The iconic 8-foot-tall, bright yellow OY/YO sculpture is heading to the Brooklyn Museum, slated to be placed out front as part of a new public art display called “Something to Say.” The sculpture, created by artist Deborah Kass, made its Brooklyn debut in 2015 at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Viewed with the Manhattan skyline in the background, it read “OY,” and on the flipside, against the backdrop of Brooklyn, it read “YO.”  “Something to Say” will be on view from Sept. 14 to June 30, 2019 and will also include work by Brooklyn Hi-Art! Machine, Kameelah Janan Rasheed and Hank Willis Thomas. (amNewYork via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NEW WILLIAMSBURG FOOD HALL ATTRACTS WELL-KNOWN EATERIES: A new food hall in Williamsburg – the North Third Street Market between Wythe Avenue and Berry Street – is filling up with some well-known eateries. One of the newest is an outpost of Greenwich Village pub Corner Bistro, known for its hamburgers. Also ready to serve customers is Kalamaki NY, a new Greek restaurant. They join a lineup that includes La Newyorkina, Bien Cuit, Chuko and the famous Di Fara pizzeria. Even more are coming, including Sausage Hero, VISH (which serves Israeli hummus) and Joy Does, run by the owners of nearby Louis Rouge. (Eater via Brooklyn Eagle)

~SELTZER COMPANY’S WILLIAMSBURG BIKE GIVEAWAY SEEN AS CHAOTIC: An attempt by Brooklyn beverage bottler Spiked Seltzer last week to hand out free bicycles to Brooklyn residents in advance of the upcoming L-Train shutdown was very disorganized, an attendee said. Brooklyn resident Jenifer Rosenberg told the Brooklyn Paper that she was denied a bike, while others who had friends wait in line for them or left bags on the sidewalk to hold their places in line got bicycles. She also added that the people who were supposed to be overseeing the process didn’t show up until about an hour and a half before the handouts began. (Brooklyn Paper via Brooklyn Eagle)

~ARE BIRD SCOOTERS COMING TO BROOKLYN?: Over 30 cities are already using Bird, a dockless, electric, rideshare scooter system. New York City, has resisted jumping on board, until now — maybe. Bird sponsored a demonstration in Bedford-Stuyvesant last week after Councilmember Rafael Espinal called for the birds to land in the borough. Councilmember Robert Cornegy attended the demonstration, excited by the opportunities the affordable scooters could offer the residents in his district. “Communities of color aren’t often at the vanguard of new technology,” Cornegy told Bklyner. “There are intelligent and capable people in this community that don’t want to be skipped by technology.” (Bklyner via Brooklyn Eagle)
