~BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK WANTS YOU TO HELP DESIGN NEW SQUIBB POOL: It’s not often that NYC residents get to help design a new public swimming pool. But that’s what’s happening in Brooklyn Heights, where Brooklyn Bridge Park is overseeing the construction of a public pool in little-used Squibb Park. The pool will be a permanent replacement for the park’s beloved but temporary Pop-Up Pool. The park will be getting residents’ opinions on issues like the preferred size and depth of the pool, types of amenities people want there (such as green space, a beach with chairs, or classes), and types of food concessions. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~SPEEDING DRIVERS BEWARE: CAMERAS BACK IN SCHOOL ZONES:Just in the nick of time, before 1.1 million students return to school, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a bill on Tuesday allowing the city to once again hit drivers with tickets for speeding in school zones. Under a law that went into effect immediately after de Blasio signed it, the owners of vehicles caught by a camera in a school zone exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 miles an hour will be slapped with a $50 ticket. The bill was signed Sept. 4, one day before the opening of city schools on Sept. 5. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~J’OUVERT CELEBRATIONS DRAW ENERGETIC CROWDS: Revelers displaying their Caribbean pride took to the streets of Brooklyn on Monday, flags waving, music blaring and feet dancing, for New York City’s annual take on Carnival celebrations. At the main West Indian American Day Parade and the early morning street party known as J’Ouvert that preceded it, they were joined by a significant police presence intended to prevent any violence from marring the events as has happened in some years. As of Monday evening, police had no reports of violence along the route. Here’s a video of the festivities. (via AP and Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~MATT DAMON REPORTEDLY MOVES INTO BROOKLYN HEIGHTS BUILDING: Matt Damon, Luciana Barroso and their four children have reportedly moved into the penthouse at The Standish, an exclusive Brooklyn Heights building that has made its mark in theater and the comics. A Columbia Heights resident who witnessed “many truckloads of stuff being moved in” to the building asked a “nosey neighbor” who told him that the famed actor had moved in. The Standish at 171 Columbia Heights was built in 1903. The hotel was purchased by the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1981, then sold to an investment group in 2007. (Brownstoner via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~WILLIAMSBURG CHEF TO OPEN NEW PASTA EATERY AT DOMINO SUGAR REFINERY: Fettuccini fans, rejoice. Missy Robbins, the woman behind the beloved Williamsburg eatery Lilia, is opening a new restaurant at the Domino Sugar Refinery this weekend: Misi. The new eatery follows Robbins’ recent coronation as the James Beard Foundation’s Best New York City Chef. Misi will follow in Lilia’s Italian-inspired tradition, but this time with a pasta-centric menu. Diners can expect fresh dishes like tortellini with greens and mascarpone, corzetti with marinated cherry tomatoes and bigoli with pork sugo. All of the pasta is shaped, cut and stuffed on site. (Grub Street via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~QUAY TOWER NEARS COMPLETION ON BROOKLYN HEIGHTS WATERFRONT: Construction on Quay Tower near Pier 6 of Brooklyn Bridge Park, between the park and the BQE at the edge of Brooklyn Heights, is now in the facade-installation phase, and completion is expected next year. The315-foot-tall building will include 126 units, ranging in size from two to five bedrooms. Prices will start around $1.9 million, with $5.5 million expected for the five-bedroom units. The curtain-wall facade, designed by ODA Architects, is decorated with brushed copper-hued metal that resembles the iron girders on the nearby pier. (YIMBY via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~MORE BROOKLYN CHURCHES ARE BEGINNING TO OFFER AFFORDABLE HOUSING: The Church of God of East Flatbush was operating out of a 9,000-square-foot space for over four decades, but the congregation outgrew its capacity. Seven years ago, the church purchased two city blocks on Hegeman Street for $8 million. Ebenezer Plaza, as the streets will be called, is slated to include not only a new church, but also retail space and 531 units of affordable housing. Bria Builders’ CEO Ericka Keller said more and more churches around the city are making real estate deals. “Currently in our pipeline we have about 1,100 units of affordable housing, all with faith-based organizations,” she said. (NY1 via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: The news likely began filtering down the Cyclones’ dugout at approximately 5 p.m. or so Sunday evening at MCU Park. The Auburn Doubledays, who had resumed play following a 49-minute rain delay, held on for an 8-5 victory at Batavia, securing the New York-Penn League’s lone wild-card spot. That meant our borough’s Baby Bums would be left out of the playoffs for a sixth consecutive summer on Coney Island. Likely disheartened, but unbowed, the 2018 Cyclones made sure to end another bittersweet season on a high note, pulling out a wild 5-4, 10-inning victoryover archrival Staten Island. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
