Academy ‘Dives’ Into Athletic Scholarships

As part of Adelphi Academy's College Preparatory Program and the school's Weekly Assembly Program, the Academy recently held an "Athletic Scholarship Assembly" in its Lockwood Auditorium, named after the school's founder.

Students listened and watched attentively as guest Paul Apostolakis gave a presentation, which included media presentations on how to pursue an athletic scholarship.

Apostolakis is a Bay Ridge resident who attended Rider University on a full athletic scholarship in competitive diving. He stressed the importance of planning early in pursuing the colleges and universities of choice. He also stressed the importance of seeking the aid of one’s coaches and committing to many long hours of practice, study and volunteer work.

"It is so important for students to plan well in advance and to pursue every opportunity that comes their way,” said Dr. Roy J. Blash, Adelphi's president and head of school. “Hearing this first-hand from someone who achieved his goals reinforces the message."  Apostalakis answers questions posed by Adelphi students at the conclusion of his presentation.

Adelphi's Assistant Head of School Iphigenia Romanos said, "We are grateful to Mr. Apostolakis and the Apostolakises for their interest in and support of our school and our students."

As the oldest private, independent, continuing, coeducational, college-preparatory day school in Brooklyn, Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn has been "effectively preparing  young people for college, career, and life, one day at a time" for 150 years. Founded in 1863 and located in the historic Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, Adelphi enrolls students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.

A strong emphasis is placed on small class size, individualized attention, self expression, critical thinking, the education of the total child and challenging hands-on learning. Adelphi students excel within a small, intimate, safe, nurturing, and caring environment through Adelphi's founding principles of pride, tradition, spirit, and excellence. The student-teacher ratio is 8 to 1 and Adelphi is a New York State Regents Exempt Program with a 100% college placement rate.
