Aesthetic Sensibilities Mauled … by Atlantic Center Mall

Atlantic Center Mall: Ugliness that stands the test of time?

A commenter on brooklyneagle.com, JustLiveHere, nominated Forest City Ratner's drab Fort Greene shopping center as one of Brooklyn's Ugliest Buildings.

Neighbors of the fortress-like structure on Atlantic Avenue, which opened in 1996, called it “the big ugly” in the early years after its construction. A pedestrian bridge built to connect it to Atlantic Terminal, a newer mall plus office building, did nothing to improve Atlantic Center Mall's looks.

Bruce Ratner himself bad-mouthed the building in a 2004 New York Times article.

“Honestly, it isn't beautiful. It's not architecturally outstanding,” he told writer Diane Cardwell. “It's not as bad as a strip center in the burbs, I mean, but it's not something that we would build again.”
