Police say a 31-year-old suspect armed with a handgun has been shot and wounded by a police officer in Brooklyn.

Police say they got a tip that a man who was illegally residing at a residence on Glenmore Avenue in East New York was in possession of a gun.

When officers surrounded the home at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the armed man tried to exit the back door and was confronted by a police officer who ordered him to drop his weapon.

Police say the suspect did not comply and the officer fired once, striking him in the torso. The man was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Police recovered a .38 caliber revolver. Charges against the suspect are pending.
