Audience will pick the winners at Park Slope theater contest

PARK SLOPE — Hot dog eating is not the only contest in town.

The audience will vote to choose the winner of a $500 prize at a playwriting competition taking place on July 11 at 8 p.m., outdoors at the Old Stone House in Park Slope.

Over the course of about one hour, Piper Theatre Productions will present three new one-act plays with a youth focus, finalists in the Piper Plays: Smart Plays for Young Actors festival. Then it will be thumbs up for the audience favorite.

The festival is the culmination of a nationwide playwriting contest. The plays presented have been chosen from over 100 entrants from throughout the United States and Canada, according to Piper Theatre. The one-act plays are “smart, dynamic, quirky, exciting, funny, disturbing and original."

The plays are: "Dancing Turtle," written by Thomas M. Atkinson and directed by Rachel Rear; "The Blasphemy of Bees," written by Christopher Dimond and directed by John McEneny; and "Brechtian Alienation," written by Sean O’Donnell and directed by John McEneny.
