Now you can relive one of the largest battles of the American Revolution by joining the Battle of Brooklyn Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, October 26 at noon.

The start of a campaign that gave the British control of the port New York, the Battle of Brooklyn (aka Battle of Long Island) took place on August 27, 1776 in areas around modern-day Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery.

Scavenger hunt participants will explore the route that George Washington and his troops took during the fateful battle to locate each point.

“The hunt starts near Green-Wood Cemetery (indicated by a red line on the map) and follows the path Washington took through the neighborhoods,” Brigid Harmon of the Historic Districts Council told the Brooklyn Eagle. “What is now cemeteries and parks follows the original path of Washington’s troops.”

The participants will be scavenging photos of battle locations “and hunters can traverse the path by any means available,” Harmon said. “Though to be historically accurate we would stick to travel on foot or horseback (muskets optional but discouraged),” she added.

HDC, Green-Wood Cemetery and urban archaeology group Chrysalis Archaeology are sponsoring the hunt.

Participants will generally be forming teams of up to four people, but don’t have to have a full team of four to register. (You can hunt with fewer than four, the sponsors can create a team for you, or you may go it alone.)

Cost per team is $15. There will be special prizes for winning teams plus rewards for all.
