As the Islamic holy month of Ramadan began last Friday, Borough President Marty Markowitz issued this statement on the vibrancy of Brooklyn’s Muslim community:

"Brooklyn is proud home to the largest Turkish and Pakistani communities, and one of the most progressive and vibrant Muslim populations in the United States. Our diversity represents nearly every corner of the Muslim world — from Bosnia, Morocco, Syria and Bangladesh to Palestine, Yemen, Egypt, Jordan and beyond. Today marks the beginning of a month of fasting, charity, sacrifice and self-reflection for hundreds of millions of Muslims here in Brooklyn and around the world, and I wish them all Ramadan Mubarak during this, a most holy time of the year for Islam.”
