New York Waterway’s East River ferry service, having outgrown its slip at Fulton Ferry Landing, has moved south to a new and improved dock at Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The river surrounding the new floating dock about 250 feet south of the old slip and on the Furman Street side of the BargeMusic concert hall has been dredged to accommodate New York Waterway’s full size commuter ferries, which carry 399 passengers. The vessels previously running the East River route carry only 149 passengers, and commuters would often be left waiting on the dock.

The larger ferries will be operating on weekends, according to New York Waterway.

The familiar yellow New York Water Taxi ferries have also moved to the new landing, said company spokesperson Stacey Sherman.

The new landing has two slips, allowing two boats to dock at the same time, Jen Friedberg, spokesperson for the city’s Economic Development Corp., told the Brooklyn Eagle.

“Wider gangways will allow people to board and disembark at the same time, along with their strollers and bikes,” she said.

“East River Ferry service has been wildly successful, and the new and improved ferry landing at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1, larger capacity vessels being added for summer weekends, and new concessions — including DUMBO’s very own Brooklyn Roasting Company — will mean a safer, faster and more comfortable ride,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz in a statement.

In a new summer schedule, the vessels will operate from 6:45 a.m. until 8:45 p.m. during the week and from 9:35 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on weekends.

The East River Ferry Service stops at Brooklyn Bridge Park, South Williamsburg, North Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Long Island City, East 34th Street, Wall Street’s Pier 11. Fare is $4 one way, and up to four children may ride free with a paying adult.

The Water Taxi, which offers “Hop-On/Hop-Off” service from Pier 1 to South Street Seaport, Battery Park, Christopher Street and West 44th Street, charges $26 for adults and $16 for children ages 3-12.

UPDATE: This story was corrected on June 1 to report that the yellow “New York Water Taxi” currently receives no government subsidies and that it has a flat “hop-on/hop-off” fare of $26 for adults and $16 for children ages 3-12. The “East River Ferry Service” operated by New York Waterway charges $4 one way and is subsidized.
