A crowd gathered in Park Slope at midnight on Tuesday to witness the 12:01 a.m. swearing in ceremony of Bill de Blasio as the109th Mayor of the City of New York. NY State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman officiated.
De Blasio was surrounded by his family -- his daughter Chiara, wearing a party hat, his wife Chirlane holding the Bible, and his son Dante wearing jeans -- as he raised his hand and took the oath of office.
"His service begins right now," Schneiderman said as the crowd cheered. Schneiderman added, "And now may I have my $9 filing fee?"
Mayor De Blasio thanked his family, the supporters "who brought us to this moment," and his neighbors "on the most wonderful block in Brooklyn."
"This is the beginning of a road we will travel together," he said.
The ceremony was live-streamed online. Mayor de Blasiowill be sworn in Wednesday by President Bill Clinton in a public inauguration ceremony at City Hall at noon.
