Brooklyn’s oldest community chorus holds auditions

Do you sing in the shower? Do you miss those karaoke nights? The Brooklyn Philharmonia Chorus, the borough’s oldest community chorus, is looking for new singers.

The chorus is holding open auditions for its 58th year beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. They will continue on Tuesdays, Sept. 17, 24 and Oct. 1 at First Presbyterian Church, 124 Henry St. in Brooklyn Heights. “We welcome anyone who has an interest in singing the great composers and more, in joining us,” says Choral Director Doug March.

The chorus rehearses on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. (with a 15-minute refreshment break) with easy access by subway — one block from the Clark Street stop on 2, 3 trains and a few blocks from Borough Hall stop on 4, 5, and R trains. The program for the Winter 2013 concert includes Handel’s Messiah and other holiday favorites.

“We are a volunteer, community-based, non-profit group whose purpose is to perform great choral works. Our membership is representative of many different ethnic, racial, and cultural groups and, indeed, reflects the great diversity of Brooklyn, as do the audiences attending our concerts,” says March. “The chorus offers singers the opportunity to perform musical compositions accompanied by class ‘A’ professional musicians and soloists at our concerts.”
