Churches in Bayside, Floral Park and Long Island City in Queens will also be part of the celebration, as they are part of the Brooklyn Diocese.

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will lead a canonization celebration at 2 p.m. that begins at St. Frances de Chantal Church, 1273 58th Street in Borough Park. Parishioners will process to Regina Pacis Basilica, 1230 65th Street in Bensonhurst, following a chaplet (brief service) for Divine Mercy Sunday.

St. Athanasius Church (2154 61st Street, Bensonhurst), will hold “12 Hours of Faith,” starting Saturday, April 26, at 10 p.m. and concluding the next day, the 27th, at 10 a.m. Together, those gathered will watch a live broadcast of the canonization, and celebrate Mass, Adoration and a procession.

Holy Name of Jesus Church, (245 Prospect Park West in Park Slope) will offer an evening of prayer, reflection and Adoration to commemorate the elevation to sainthood of the two former popes. The parish’s website calendar lists this evening of reflection to runs from 6-11 p.m. on Sunday.

Both popes were beatified (named Blessed) as part of the process involved in elevating people to sainthood. Blessed John XXIII was pope from 1958 to 1963, and was beatified by blessed John Paul II in 2000. Blessed John Paul II served as pope from 1978 to 2005; Pope Benedict XVI beatified him on Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, 2011.
