Brooklyn 7-year-old’s work published in kids’ magazine

A 7-year-old Brooklyn girl who has been writing poetry since the age of 5 recently had one of her poems selected for publication in a children’s magazine.

The girl is Eleanor Henry, age 7, of Fort Greene, a second-grade student at Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights. The three-line poem is called “Dance of the Fireflies,” and it follows:

“The fireflies dance by the light of the full moon—
a glow beyond the trees,
and then, silence.”

In July, Spider Magazine asked its readers to submit an original poem about summer for its “Spider’s Corner” feature.

Eleanor’s poem was one of 18 that was published as one of “Our Favorites” in the July-August “Spider’s Corner,” and she was one of the youngest poets chosen – most of the others were at least age 8 or above.

Eleanor’s mother, Helen Gregory Henry, told the Eagle that Eleanor started writing in kindergarten. “There was a wonderful program in school called `Poem in Your Pocket’ day,” she said. “She’s always been interested in reading and writing.

“This is the first time [she’s been published] and it was sort of fun. She’s creative and a lot of fun – she’s great on the soccer field, she loves riding, has a great balance, and she loves school.”

Eleanor, her mother says, definitely plans to write more – she wrote another poem called “The Sadness of You” when her sister went to summer camp.

Eleanor’s parents, Brian Henry and the aforementioned Mrs. Henry, moved to Brooklyn from Manhattan in 2001. He’s an attorney, while she has her own public relations firm that specializes in marketing food and wine. They have two other children, Charlotte (age 11) and Graham (age 5).
