Brooklyn Acting Troupe Moves an Audience for Free, Performs Plays Too

A new Brooklyn theater troupe will move you to tears and into a fifth-floor walkup, all for free, according to Brokelyn.

Undaunted by conventional notions of profitability or a temporary inability to rent stage space, the Brooklyn acting trio Rudy’s Meritocracy has happened upon a failsafe way to secure an audience and a platform for their plays: They will move you into a new apartment, for free, on the condition that you let them give a 40-minute performance in your new living room.

The trio’s limited-run living room show, which is about moving into a new apartment, is called THISISMYREALLIFE, and according to the group’s website, it aims to “transform the often exhausting, stressful, and anxiety-filled moving day into a surprisingly pleasant and ultimately reflective experience.”

For those who want to see the show but not badly enough to move, the trio (they are: O’Hagan Blades, Charles Gariepy, and Cordelia Istel) has wrangled a few empty apartments in Bushwick and Park Slope that they’ll use to stage three performances of their show in the coming weeks. Not surprisingly, seating is very limited at all three performances and aspiring audience members can RSVP to rudysmeritocracy@gmail.com for a spot.
