Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Borough Park/Midwood) expressed his disappointment with a jury that acquitted a man for the attempted murder of members of a Jewish patrol group.

A group of Shomrim — a Hebrew word for “watch group” — surrounded David Flores’ car in 2010 after the group was convinced that Flores had masturbated in front of neighborhood children. Flores, who had a weapon on his person at the time, fired gun rounds into the crowd, injuring four.  After pulling out the weapon, Flores asserted that the some members of the Shomrim assaulted him.

A Brooklyn jury acquitted Flores of 15 charges, including attempted murder and assault.

“It’s beyond comprehension,” said Hikind. “Four unarmed people shot and hospitalized. How was this sick individual not found guilty? How could the DA possible lose this case? Now Flores is out and capable of creating more mayhem? This is our justice system upside down. It’s insane!”

The Brooklyn jury disagreed. “The Shomrim can’t decide if they’re going to be judge, jury and executioner in the middle of the street,” juror Niccole Person of Bedford-Stuyvesant told the New York Daily News. Flores’ attorney argued that the Shomrim instigated the attack, and Flores only acted in pure self-defense.
