National Book Award-winning author Andrew Solomon will appear at BookCourt Thursday, Jan. 17, to discuss his new book “Far From The Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity.” In this fascinating text, Solomon explores family relationships, giving voice to parents who struggle to raise exceptional children.
Solomon draws upon his extensive research on families coping with autism, schizophrenia, dwarfism, and other potentially isolating characteristics to conclude that such circumstances – though they seemingly segregate us – actually work to universalize the struggles that each family endures. Solomon points out that all parents, regardless of their children’s specific personality traits, are challenged to find a balance between accepting their children and helping them to fully develop their potential.
Andrew Solomon is the author of “The Irony Tower: Soviet Artists in a Time of Glasnost” and “A Stone Boat.” His book “The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression,” a Pulitzer Prize finalist and a New York Times bestseller, has won fourteen national awards, including the 2001 National Book Award.
