Good afternoon. Today is the 338th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Dec. 4, 1888, reported that Dr. Francis Tumblety, whom London authorities suspected of being responsible for the “Jack the Ripper” murders, had arrived in New York. Police Inspector Byrnes told the Eagle that although Tumblety was a fugitive from justice, he could not be extradited to England. Even so, Byrnes ordered that Tumblety be kept under strict surveillance. Tumblety was only one of many Jack the Ripper suspects, and to this day, the real identity of the mass murderer is unknown.

Well-known people who were born today include Max Baer Jr. of “The Beverly Hillbillies,” model-actress Tyra Banks, actress Deanna Durbin, Brooklyn-born rapper and music executive Jay-Z, Brooklyn-born actress Marisa Tomei (“My Cousin Vinnie”) and jazz singer Cassandra Wilson.
