Good morning. Today is the 191st day of the year. To see what kind of entertainment was being offered in 1863, we can look at the front page of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle for July 10 of that year, which carries an advertisement for a “new revue” called “Watch Out for Your Carpet Bag.” The revue, which was being presented at Hooley’s Opera House at the corner of Court and Remsen streets, featured sketches such as“The Roof Scramblers,” “Granny Heath” and, interestingly, “The Ten Shaking Quakers from Lebanon, New Hampshire.” Both Shakers and Quakers were thought of as a curiosity in those days. The show also included “plantation scenes,” even though we were at war with the Confederacy at the time.

Well-known people who were born today include former Mayor David Dinkins, actor Ron Glass (“Barney Miller”), Brooklyn-born actor Adrian Grenier (“Entourage”), Brooklyn-born singer Arlo Guthrie (“Alice’s Restaurant”) and actress-singer Jessica Simpson (“The Dukes of Hazzard”).
