Brooklyn judge and lawyer Kamins honored for distinguished service

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Barry Kamins was one of eight people honored by the New York State Bar Association for distinguished service in Criminal Justice.

Kamins is the new chief of policy and planning for New York state’s Unified Courts System, co-chair of the Advisory Committee on Criminal Law and Procedure for the Chief Administrative Judge of New York, as well as the New York State Permanent Sentencing Commission. He was presented with the Vincent E. Doyle, Jr. Award for Outstanding Judicial Contribution in the Criminal Justice System at the NYSBA Annual Meeting on Jan. 30.

Brooklyn attorney Jessica W. Goldthwaite was also honored with the Michele S. Maxian Award for Outstanding Public Defense Practitioner. Goldthwaite, an eight-year veteran of the Legal Aid Society's Criminal Defense Practice, is a member of the Legal Aid Society’s DNA unit, where she is involved in staff training, as well as defending in cases involving DNA evidence.

Jason D. Effman of Albany, an associate commissioner of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, received an award for his Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Correctional Services. Syosset criminal defense attorney Anthony J. Colleluori was recognized for his Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Criminal Law Education. NYPD Officer Phillip Banks III was given honor for Outstanding Police Contribution in the Criminal Justice System, and finally, Buffalo prosecutor Frank A. Sedita III was presented with the award for Outstanding Prosecutor.

"This year's class of award winners represents the epitome of talent, dedication and service to the criminal justice community," said Criminal Justice Section Chair Hon. Mark Dwyer of Brooklyn, a judge in Brooklyn’s Supreme Court. "New Yorkers are well served by these outstanding attorneys and jurists."
