Authorities say four people were hurt in a multi-car accident on the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn. Dep. Insp. Richard De Blasio of the 68th Police Precinct in Bay Ridge said the accident involved 13 cars on the Manhattan-bound HOV lane on the expressway.
Fire officials say the victims were taken to a local hospital. All the injuries appeared minor. Fox 5 News reports that it happened in the eastbound HOV lanes near Sixth Avenue at around 4:30 a.m. It's causing major traffic delays in the area.
It would take some time for emergency crews to clear the roadway, DeBlasio said.“Vehicles are bring lifted by crane to the main lanes in order to be removed from the center lane,” he wrote in a text message to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
“Traffic is flowing in both directions but very slowly due to lane closures. We are working to remove the vehicles and open lanes,” DeBlasio wrote.
Police are investigating to determine what caused the accident.
“There apparently was black ice from water which may have come from a construction site,” DeBlasio wrote.
