Brooklyn Public Library’s Summer Reading Program signals the start of summer days filled with beloved books for thousands of kids.

This year’s launch-day party at BPL’s Central Branch, 10 Grand Army Plaza is slated for Thursday, June 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Brooklyn favorite “Carmelo the Science Fellow” will be a special guest, along with attractions from the Prospect Park Zoo, The Intrepid, and the New York Hall of Science. BPL President & CEO Linda E. Johnson and Master of Ceremonies (and DJ) Elaine Gil will be on hand.

Many kids experience what is known as the “summer slide” over summer break, with lower-income and disadvantaged students disproportionately affected.  BPL’s Summer Reading Program not only enriches and entertains kids over the summer, but has the side benefit of counteracting this scholastic slump.

BPL Summer Reading Program Kick-off:

10:30 a.m.: Carnegie Kids: Shine and the Moonbeams

Shine and the Moonbeams create a soulful musical extravaganza that captures the sweetness, uncertainty and simplicity of youth.  Guitarist John Heagle currently plays with the faux French garage-rockers Les Sans Culottes.  Singer songwriter Shawana Kemp’s other gig is teaching social studies in a NYC public school.

11:30 a.m.: Official Kick-off and Celebrity Reading

Special guest Carmelo the Science Fellow kicks off Brooklyn Public Library’s Summer Reading program and reads to local children.  BPL’s President & CEO Linda E. Johnson will be in attendance.

12:30 p.m.: From Masterworks to Fireworks

The Noel Pointer Foundation Youth Orchestra, formed in 2008, performs with famous music icons and ensembles such as Mo Def, Mark O’Connor, Strings of Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Philharmonic and Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.  Since the Foundation’s inception, NPF has served over 20,000 New York City public school children.

1:30 p.m.: Amazing Adaptations: The Dinosaur Adventure

The Central Park Zoo’s Wildlife Theater presents an adventure back in time to learn how dinosaurs’ adaptations are a lot like the ones we have in modern times.  With dinosaur puppets and engaging songs.

2:30 p.m. Hip Pickles Drum Band

Hip Pickles present an exceptional, interactive performance, melding music and participation.
