Erin Sayar, former teacher at James Madison High School in Marine Park, Brooklyn, has plead guilty to sexually assault charges steaming from accusations that she engaged in a sexual relationship with her student Kevin Eng. Sayar, 36, a former English teacher subsequently turned herself in to Brooklyn’s Special Victims Unit on the eight criminal counts of statutory rape, 16 counts of sexual abuse of a minor, and other related charges. She was released on $10,000 bail.

After appearing in Brooklyn Supreme Court, Criminal Term, Sayar has plead guilty to the charges and will receive a 10-year probation sentence.

Despite the end to Sayar’s criminal case, there is still a civil case pending against Sayar and the New York City Department of Education for their alleged role in the assault and battery of Eng. The suit, brought by Brooklyn attorney Bruce Baron on behalf of his clients Kevin Eng and his mother Maureen Eng, alleges that the City of New York in general and the New York City DOE in particular, were negligent in hiring Sayar and that they failed to report or investigate allegations of sexual abuse.

Eng and his mother are seeking monetary relief for the damages they claim to have endured as a result of the humiliation, mental anguish, and emotional distress this sex scandal has brought. The suit also asks for punitive damages against Sayar and the Department of Education.

“The Eng family is thankful to Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Joe Hynes for securing swift justice against Sayar for her unlawful acts,” Baron said in a statement. “We now look forward to aggressively pursuing all defendants responsible in the Civil matter pending in Supreme Court Kings County.”
