Good morning. Today is the 105th day of the year. On April 15, 1861, soon after the Civil War broke out, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle carried an editorial titled “Civil War and Its Consequences.” The editorial writer reported that President Lincoln’s first objective was to re-take U.S. Army and Navy forts that had been occupied by Confederate forces, but predicted correctly that all-out war would ensue. By waiting until the Confederates attacked first (at Fort Sumpter), the Eagle said, Lincoln had won over those who were unsure about the Union cause. While the somewhat conservative Eagle still decried the “agitation over slavery” that led to the war, the editorial said that war was now upon us, and everyone needed to support the federal troops..

Well-known people who were born today include country singer-guitarist Roy Clark, actress Amy Wright (“Breaking Away,” “Wise Blood”), actor Seth Rogan (“The 40-Year-Old Virgin”), hockey player Ilya Kovalchuk and former football player Jason Sehorn.
