Good morning. Today is the 117th day of the year. It is the anniversary of the 1985 Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster. At 1:23 a.m., an explosion occurred at the Chernobyl atomic power station at Pripyat in the Ukraine. The resulting fire burned for days, sending radioactive material into the atmosphere. More than 100,000 people were evacuated from a 300-square-mile area around the plant. Three months after the disaster, 31 people were reported to have died and thousands of people had been exposed to dangerous levels of radiation.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Giancarlo Esposito (Do the Right Thing, Twilight), actor Kevin James (“The King of Queens”), singer Bobby Rydell (“Wild One,” “Volare”) and musician Duane Eddy (“Rebel Rouser”).

According to The Local, the public restroom in the Fort Greene Park Visitors Center will not re-open this month, as the Parks Department previously promised. Construction on the severely clogged sewer line below the bathrooms was expected to begin in late March, but the deadline has now been extended to early June, according to the Parks Department.
