Good morning. Today is the 227th day of the year. In 1902, only a tiny percentage of the population owned automobiles, but car crashes were already becoming a problem. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Aug. 14, 1902, plays up the fatal car crash of Charles Fair, brother-in-law of Cornelius Vanderbilt, and his wife on a road outside of Paris. The car swerved and crashed into a tree.

Well-known people who were born today include singer-guitarist David Crosby of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Hall of Fame basketball player Magic Johnson, cartoonist Gary Larson (“The Far Side”) author Danielle Steel (“Vanished,” “Wanderlust”) and football player Tim Tebow.
