Brooklyn Today: Aug. 20, 2012

Good morning. Today is the 233rd day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Aug. 20, 1901, reported on a fight between several Union Street homeowners and the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company, which owned most of the trolley lines in the borough. The homeowners had gone to court to get an injunction against the transit company’s plan to lay tracks on Union Street. At the time the article was being written, the case was being referred to the Appellate Division. The Union Street line was eventually built and ran until 1945, when it was converted to a bus line.

Well-known people who were born today include boxing promoter Don King, singer Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Brooklyn-born TV personality Al Roker, director-playwright Melvin Van Peebles (“Ain’t Supposed To Die a Natural Death”), actor Clarence Williams II (“The Mod Squad”) and singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon (“What the World Needs Now Is Love”).
