Good morning. Today is the 241st day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Aug. 28, 1902, reported that the New York Dock Company put up a moveable fence at the foot of Conover Street in Red Hook to assert its ownership of the pier. The city contended that because of legislation that was passed in the 19th century, the pier was public property. In reality, the fence was for appearances’ sake – everyone who wanted to proceed was allowed to go. Today, the historic Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge is docked at the foot of Conover Street.

Well-known people who were born today include former baseball player Ron Guidry, former Yankee manager Lou Piniella, actor David Soul (“Starsky and Hutch”) and singer LeAnn Rimes.
