Brooklyn Daily Eagle
Good morning. Today is the 221st day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for this day in 1899 featured an article about a U.S. force of 4,000 men, led by Gen. Arthur MacArthur, defeating a Filipino force of 6,000 men in Angeles, a town north of Manila. The Filipinos had originally welcomed the Americans when they helped to overthrow Spanish rule in the Philippines, but then rebelled when the Americans started to take charge of the country instead of granting them independence. Gen. Arthur MacArthur was the father of Gen. Douglas MacArthur of World War II fame.
