Good morning. Today is the 349th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Dec. 14, 1890, ran a letter to the editor in which the writer reflects on the importance of public libraries for education. He remarks on the “merry young misses” from Pratt Institute “chattering” on the steps of the library, and says, “one cannot help feeling what a great influence the library is.” He adds that going to the library will help “the sturdy youngster of 12 who leaves the classroom to battle with life itself.” At that time, many people left school and entered the workplace at that age.

Well-known people who were born today include former baseball player Craig Biggio, actress Jane Birkin, former baseball player Bill Buckner, Olympic gymnast Samantha Peszek and atress Dee Wallace Stone.
