Good morning. Today is the 53rd day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Feb. 22, 1902, reported that a severe ice storm had crippled the city. Brighton Beach, in particular, was cut off from the rest of the city because the overhead wires on the streetcars were damaged. There also were reports of horses being killed by electricity from the falling overhead wires. Telephone wires were also knocked down, although few people had telephones at that point other than the wealthy, large department stores, business executives and government offices.

Well-known people who were born today include golfer Amy Alcott, actress Drew Barrymore (“Charlie’s Angels,” “E.T.”), Hall of Fame basketball player Julius “Dr. J.” Erving, basketball player Rajon Rondo and actress Julie Waters (“Billy Elliot,” “Educating Rita”).
