Brooklyn Today for February 26

Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Good morning. Today is the 57th day of the year. On Feb. 26, 1888, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle tried to answer a letter to the editor that asked whether a man whose parents were both American citizens but were living abroad at the time of his birth could be president. The unnamed Eagle writer who answered the letter noted the the Constitution specifies that the president must be a “natural-born citizen” but is unclear about what that phrase means. However, the writer then quoted several lawyers and elected officials who answered that such a person could indeed legally become president.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Erykah Badu, singer Michael Bolton, singer Fats Domino (“Ain’t That a Shame,” “Blueberry Hill,” “I’m Walking”), Hall of Fame football player Marshall Faulk and U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-Virginia).
