Good morning. Today is the 34th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Feb. 3, 1902, reported how a “trusty” in the Queens County Jail (a prisoner given certain jobs and privileges) let two fellow prisoners out of a cell, and the three escaped. One of the men, the Eagle reported, was William Travis, aka Alfred O’Neil, identified as a “Brooklyn burglar.” The trusty was also from Brooklyn – Alfred Lewis, a “vagrant” from Adelphi Street. He had a job as a dishwasher in the “Court House Restaurant” in the jail’s top floor.

Well-known people who were born today include comedian Shelley Berman (‘Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman”), Brooklyn-born actor Thomas Calabro (“Melrose Place”), actress Morgan Fairchild (“Dallas,” ‘Falcon Crest”), actor Nathan Lane (“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and “The Producers”) and Hall of Fame football player Fran Tarkenton.
