Good morning. Today is the 39th day of the year.  On this day in 1587, Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded in England after being accused of plotting to kill Queen Elizabeth. While still sitting on the Scottish throne, she was accused of knowingly marrying the murderer of her second husband. She was forced to abdicate and fled to England, thinking that Elizabeth, her cousin, would protect her. However, Elizabeth saw her as a threat, especially since Mary was a Catholic and was secretly supported by many English Catholics.

Well-known people who were born today include comedian Robert Klein, former basketball player Alonzo Mourning, actor Nick Nolte (Affliction, Prince of Tides) and actress Brooke Adams (Days of Heaven, Gas Food Lodgings).

The Daily News yesterday described Columbia Heights as “the city’s off-the-radar Millionaire’s Row.” The Brooklyn Heights street, only six blocks long, is home to the borough’s most expensive houses, including one that sold for $11 million last month and another that sold for $10.75 million in 2006.

The L Magazine informs us that on the Sunset Park waterfront between 43rd and 51st streets, the long-planned Bush Terminal Pier Park is now under construction. When finished, the park will include two tidal ponds, two artificial-turf sports fields, bike lanes, open spaces, a picnic area and possibly a miniature golf course.

A group of “funky, artsy, offbeat creative types” in their 20s and 30s will sweat in steam rooms and saunas as well as indulge in pierogies and vodka at Brooklyn Banya’s annual Valentine’s Day party, according to Courier Life’s Brooklyn Daily. Brooklyn’s Hungry March Band will also entertain at the Russian-style event.  Brooklyn Banya is located at 602 Coney Island Ave. between Beverly Road and Avenue C.
