Good morning. Today is the 13th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Jan. 13, 1894, talked about the importance of free libraries. It spotlighted several institutions, most notably the Cooper Institute (now Cooper Union) Free Reading Room in Lower Manhattan, and the membership-only Mercantile Library in Midtown Manhattan, which later became the Center for Fiction. As for the Brooklyn Public Library system, it wouldn’t even exist until two years later.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Seinfeld”), writer Jay McInerney (“Bright Lights, Big City”), actor Orlando Bloom (”Pirates of the Caribbean”), actress Frances Sternhagen (“Cheers,” “The Good Doctor’) and hockey player Nikolai Khablunin.
