Good morning. Today is the 24th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Jan. 24, 1902, quoted NYC Bridge Commissioner Gustav Lindenthal as saying that he was fed up with the delays on the “new East River Bridge,” meaning the Manhattan Bridge. He threatened to take the contract away from the Roebling family, who built the Brooklyn Bridge, if the work was not finished in six months.
He was particularly angered by the fact that some of the workmen were apparently learning on the job. “The bridge is no school,” Lindenthal said.

Well-known people who were born today include Brooklyn-born singer-composer Neil Diamond (“Cherry,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Crackling Rosie”), singer-songwriter Aaron Neville (“Tell It LIke It Is”), comedian Yakov Smirnoff and Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton.
